EEOC Releases Details of Sexual Harassment Case and Pregnancy Discrimination Lawsuit Settlements

Last week, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (“EEOC”) released the details of two lawsuit settlements on December 1, 2015 and December 2, 2015 respectively as follows:

  1. Sexual Harassment Case Settlement

EEOC brought a sexual harassment lawsuit against Suffolk Laundry Services, Inc. (“Suffolk”). In this suit, EEOC charged Suffolk’s manager with physically and verbally sexually harassing numerous female employees who worked at Suffolk’s laundry services facility. Suffolk settled the case with EEOC by: (i) agreeing to pay a $582,000 settlement to eight former female employees and (ii) entering into a four-year consent decree. For more information on the details of this case and the consent decree, see EEOC’s December 1, 2015 press release.

  1. Pregnancy Discrimination Lawsuit

EEOC brought a pregnancy discrimination lawsuit against Shefa Wellness Center (“Shefa”) for firing a pregnant employee two days after the employee notified Shefa that she was pregnant. EEOC alleged that when the employee asked Shefa why she was being terminated, Shefa told the employee that she had deceived the company by not disclosing her pregnancy during the interview process. Shefa settled this lawsuit with EEOC by: (i) agreeing to pay a $37,000 settlement and (ii) entering into a consent decree. For additional details on the case and the consent decree, see EEOC’s press release issued December 2, 2015.
